a typical day & $250 gift card giveaway

This is a compensated review by BlogHer and Intel. I received a laptop for compensation and will tell you my honest thoughts about it…

(continued from 320 Sycamore)

clean up lunch, read books, boys down for naps, eat my lunch, take pictures, edit pictures, write blog post, catch up on email, tie up a project, boys wake up, kids come home, snacks, help with homework, practice reading with 5 year old, go through folders, practice piano for other daughter, piano teacher comes to give lessons upstairs, take boys downstairs to pick up playroom and then they play (and sometimes they just fight), tidy downstairs family room, wipe down bathroom, drop 8 yr old off at soccer practice, finish dinner, throw veggies in microwave (love those steamable bags), kids set table, I run pick up from soccer, husband comes home, eat dinner as a family, clear table, every other week is Activity Days at the church, thank goodness not tonight, finish any homework, end of the day (why are they wrapping me in packing stuff? I have no idea. it’s the end of the day. welcome to our house.)

husband and I tag team bedtime: get boys and baby ready for bed: baths, teeth brushed, drinks, read books, say prayers, then repeat for girls, 3 yr old comes out (again) for drink, bathroom, another song, put him back in bed, watch news while husband and I clean up from dinner, start dishwasher, check email, down time with husband, shower, get ready for bed, brush teeth, take makeup off, empty brain out onto white board of things not to forget tomorrow, scribble a few lines in my line a day journal, fall asleep while reading, (11:30) repeat again tomorrow.

Maybe Blogher saw my day and decided I needed help….

because they sent me a new laptop with an Intel® Core™ i5 processor!

It is super fast with something called Turbo Boost Technology…which allows me to get on, get what I need done quickly, then get off. It also has an Intel®Wireless Display (aka WiDi)which allows me to use an HDTV for a monitor. So cool! I will show you more later, but the BEST part is?

  1. I would love to win this! My tip is taking at least five minutes of alone time (even if it's just in the shower) so you don't lose your mind!

  2. Something that helps my day run smoothly... Well, my bedroom has to be tidied up and my bed has to be made. If those things are done, and things get crazy with the kids, I have a peaceful place to go and hide for a minute or two where I can collect my thoughts and "count to 10"... it has seriously made my life so much easier to start my day making sure my bedroom is ready for me if I need it, haha! :)

  3. Oh this is a great giveaway! Just in time for Christmas shopping!

I try to manage my time by writing weekly goal in different areas and trying my best to cross all off my list by the following Monday. It doesn’t always happen but I give it my best!

  5. I have one of those giant mom calendars on my fridge where I can write everything down. It helps me know whats coming so I feel more prepared when one of the little squares is packed with events!

  8. Wow, you are a busy bee!!!! My days run the smoothest when I am up and out of bed long before my 6 year old. The days when I get up at the same time that he does are so chaotic and we hardly ever make it out of the door on time. Thanks for the awesome giveaway.

  9. My best tips are to make school lunches the night before & to pick out my work clothes the night before too.!

  10. At five o'clock, we begin the "rally"- that's our time to clean up the day's messes, tidy up before Daddy comes home and get things nice and neat for the evening. Works like a charm!

  11. I think one of the most helpful things for me to make my day run smoothly is to prepare the night before.

  12. I made a rule that I have to get my house cleaning done before I can do any of the fun things I want to do. It makes me get the cleaning done quickly. :)

  13. Oh the only way I can make it thru the day is to wake up early in the morning (before kids) which allows me time to read and tidy up the house before all chaos begins.

  14. Great giveaway! My tip is taking 30 minutes or less to prep for the morning by laying out the clothes for the day & getting lunches ready except for the perishable items. The morning goes much smoother. Would love to win this giveaway.

  15. What a busy day! My tip is prepping coffee the night before so when we wake up it is one less thing to do.

    ReplyDelete
  16. A smooth day...hmm...I think the key is to have a plan and to stay in control of the time (aka don't let time be frittered away on Facebook or looking at all the really awesome blogs out there!).

    ReplyDelete
  17. My tip of making each day go smoothly...
Do something, even just one thing, every single day for someone else. It makes you feel good. And when some maniac cuts you off on the highway, or the dentist's office is running 45 minutes behind schedule, you know in your heart and can feel peaceful because you have done something for someone else. Not to mention that goodness always comes back around ten fold.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hmmm, a smooth day is usually just written into the Cosmos it seems. I try not to think too far into my day and it goes a lot better. I have four little girls and by the evening the house looks like a dress up tornado has hit. One thing at a time and it actually has the potential to be pleasant.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I would love to win! On thing I do is have uplifting music on during the day, it helps to calm me and that in turn calms the whole house. My favorites are Paul Cardall and Jenny Oaks Baker. I also though life would slow down as my kids got older....Nope! It's still as busy as ever.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I do a few things the night before to help my morning run faster:

    1. Hang my keys on the key hook and not in my purse

    2. Prep the percolator so I can't start the coffee quickly in the morning

    3. Set out my clothes for the next day.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Gotta say the hubby. He gives me those moments of me time. Even if he just takes the baby to the bank with him and I get an hour. Or if he brings him outside for a little bit :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'm tired just reading that!
I make my daughters lunch (for the sitter) the night before and put in the fridge. I also fill her sippy cup and sit out bowls and things we'll need for breakfast too. The morning is TOO hectic for one more thing! And sometimes my one year old stays in her jammies! Is that so bad!?:) Jammies are comfy!:)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh how I could put this to good use. My best tip is to break tasks into small time chunks. If I set a timer for 10 minutes and tackle the living room, it doesn't feel like too much work and I can make a big difference.

    ReplyDelete
  24. My tip for helping the day run smoother is being prepared and making lists.... I make lists daily... sometimes twice a day... Things that need to get done, things that I need to purchase, etc. With 3 boys, you never know WHAT they are going to get into on the way out the door or after something has been clean, but if I can prep the night before, clothing, dinner, start the dishwasher...anything I can that can me a step ahead tomorrow, helps! :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh I LOVE your day. I LOVE your idea for writing down on a dry erase board the things you need to remember tomorrow (how many sleepless nights I have had while thinking "I need to remember this tomorrow"). I get through the day by completely focusing on RIGHT NOW. If I start thinking about the 15,000 things we have to do in the day I get overwhelmed. But focusing on NOW helps me.

    ReplyDelete
  26. What an awesome giveaway! My best tip is to do whatever I can the night before. For instance, if I'm going on a shopping trip, I make a detailed list, get all my coupons ready, pick out my son's outfit, and get his diaper bag and snack ready. I'm not saying this always happens, but when it does, it's a LOT easier to get out the door when he's awake and running around the house tearing things apart. :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. The trick for me since I am working full time is to organize the night before. I also make a to-do list every afternoon at work for the next day -- I don't always accomplish all but it gives me an agenda every evening!

  31. What an awesome giveaway!! I would love to win this gift card! :) My tip is to make a to-do list for the following day. I may not always get everything done, but it makes me feel more organized instead of scatter-brained in the morning. Also, a good cup of coffee helps the day run smoothly, too! Thanks for hosting this giveaway!!

  32. Definitley trying to get organized the night before!

I have to add this b/c it made me laugh and gasp at the same time!

I LOVE postsecret and recently bought a postsecret book and there was a secret in there that said "i dress my kids in their clothes including their shoes, the night before to save time in the morning!"

Anyhow, I couldnt do that but i guess if it works for them! LOL

  33. WOW...Sounds a lot like my day:) CrAZy! When you figure out how to make life a little easier drop me a line...hehe:) I think the only thing that really keeps me sane and my day a lot smoother is if I get up before the kids and exercise. My endorphines are up and I can be happy and face the madness with a smile! Thanks for the AWESOME giveaway.

  35. Count me in on this fab giveaway :) My day usually runs smoothly if I've planned tonight's dinner the night before. Actually, my hubs and I make a 'menu' on Sunday for the entire week, do our grocery shopping, so each night, before bed, we reference it, and make sure to defrost/prep anything for tomorrow. Saves so much time!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Love this giveaway! My tip for a smooth day is getting up a few minutes early so I can have my personal downtime/journal/coffee time....starts my attitude off right!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I could so use that gift card my dishwasher went kaput last night!!! What I do to make my day go smoother is to not sweat the small stuff, they want to wear some wacky non matching outfit to school....eh go for it your dressed and clean showing off some personality, I know these things will become my greatest memories when my girls are grown.

    ReplyDelete
  38. You definitely a a busy lady!

My tip is to put things into perspective, realize what is really important, and have a sense of humor so you can laugh when things don't go your way. :)

  39. oooh! i would LOVE a $250 gc to best buy!!

ok, what makes my day run smoothly??? hmmm, probably taking the time to communicate (early and often) w/ the husband, so that i know what we both need to accomplish (esp since we share a car!)

    *hope i win!!*

  40. I get everyones clothes ready the night before. Sign all papers. Make sure everyone has socks and shoes together and by the door. Make sure jackets are hung up and not in the car! Pack basketball duffles with uniforms, shoes, gatorade and snacks. And we still forget something!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. My tip for having a smooth day is to write down a to-do list the night before. Between work and home I have a LONG list. So, I came up with a plan of writing down three things to do at work the next day and three things to do at home the next day, this way I am not overwhelmed by seeing my complete list.

    ReplyDelete
  42. go to bed at a decent hour so you're not exhausted by 10am. all those shows you are dvr-ing will be there in the morning to watch while your folding laundry.

  45. My best tip to make our day room more smooth is to simply get up before the kids do. If I have already done a good night routine, then all I need to do is get ready and then all my attention can go towards the kids. I haven't been so good at this lately. Hmmm....maybe I should listen to my own advice!

    ReplyDelete
  46. The thing I have been focusing on lately is to capture the time I have and get something done....or in other words don't get sucked into blog land and get nothing else done:)

    ReplyDelete
  47. I have to write everything down, otherwise it's forgotten!

    ReplyDelete
  48. my tip: take the time to eat "right" food. Hate being this strange person so affected by wheat/sugar, but negative reinforcement makes me choose better.

  49. My tip for making a day go smoothly...schedule computer time and turn it off during the non-computer time. Emails and facebook and even blog postings can sap up endless minutes of the day.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I get up an hour before everyone else to get breakfast started, the school lunches packed, the clothes laid out, etc.

  51. Mostly my day runs smoothly by keeping things uncomplicated- not taking on more responsibility than I know I can handle, prioritizing the things that really matter to me, planing and making list for things I know will overwhelm me, and re-evaluating my routines when I have a couple bad days in a row.

    What a great givaway!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Smooth days at our house don't come that easy. But I do try to start each day with a prayer, and a positive attitude!

    ReplyDelete
  55. The best tip I have for making the day go smoothly is to clean up as you go. After every meal, project, school lesson ,etc. That way at the end of the day you are not overwhelmed with dishes, paint or paper all over the place.

    ReplyDelete
  56. My secret to a day running well is to make sure that everyone eats a good breakfast. I find that if that doesn't get done, then everyone is grumpy for the rest of the day.
jthesavage at gmail dot com, hope I win!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I write down everything on my calendar so there is no chance to forget something is happening and I check it before I go to bed or right when I get up so I can plan my day.

    ReplyDelete
  58. My smooth tip is SCHEDULE, SCHEDULE, SCHEDULE!!!! I run a tight ship with 4 kids, 11,8 and 4 year old twins, a home daycare business AND a photography business. I get a lot of guff for being overly organized but I would lose my mind without it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. I don't know what my tip is, but I've sure gotten some good ideas from reading these comments. I suppose I would say just having a plan. Know what needs to get done and when it's all going to happen.

    ReplyDelete
  60. to do lists!!! also, i take care of all my quiet housework before anyone else wakes up.

    ReplyDelete
  61. My best tip is to do what you can the night before: pick out clothes, make lunches, etc. It makes the morning rush seem a little smoother.

    ReplyDelete
  62. What an awesome giveaway! My tip is to get dressed in the morning. If I stay in my jammies and robe I am more likely to just sit around all day every day just being a schlub. If I am dressed I find more motivation!

    ReplyDelete
  63. My tip is to lay everything out the night before.

    ReplyDelete
  64. My best tip is figuring out lunch and work clothes the night before- so much easier in the morning.

  65. I would love to win the gift card! We could use a new TV for our family room.
My day goes smoothly due to my organized mudroom. I have shelf with hooks (hung at level that children can reach) for jackets, backpacks and belts (my boys wear uniforms)and a shoe rack for school shoes beneath the shelf. As soon as the boys enter the house, backpacks and jackets are hung, shoes are removed and stored and belts are hung. Homework is done in the kitchen and once it is finished, gets placed in the backpack. No more running around in the morning searching for homework or school shoes, or belts or backpacks. And no more forgotten backpacks or homework assignments. It's become routine and I don't have to remind the boys anymore (ages 10 and 7). We are all happier in the morning and the evening! I love having my morning routine run smoothly - I think it helps everyone start off to a good day.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Prayer--as in, PLEASE let me end the day with my sanity and four kids in tact.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Oh, my goodness. I think of myself as a busy person. You definitely have me beat!

My best tip isn't really mine at all--it's FlyLady's: turn on the timer. I always work better under pressure, even if it's pressure I've applied to myself. So I turn on the timer for various jobs and work to beat it! It's amazing how much that helps.

    A great giveaway! Thank you!!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Pulling myself out of bed to shower before it's time to wake the kids is SO hard but makes my day much better.
    :) Great Giveaway!!

  71. The number one way to help my day along is to plan it out the night before. Must be the night before, not the morning of. With that list in hand as a guide, I can check things off and move along. Without it, I am lost! Great giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  72. My best tip is making lists. Lists, Lists, Lists!! I make lists on everything for anything and than I throw them in my purse until I clean them out.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Great giveaway! The best thing I do every week to make my days smoother are to meal plan. I also do some freezer cooking. It's one less thing to have to think about each day.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Getting up at 5:30 every morning to get my morning walk, shower, and quiet time completed before the kids are awake:) When I get out of this routine my day is crazy ALL day long!

    ReplyDelete

    snowsquirt86@hotmail.com

  80. My best tip is to start the day with a clear kitchen counter and table. My day seems to be so much easier if I start it this way! (why don't I do it more often? :)

    ReplyDelete
  81. Wow, what a day!
My children are grown up so my days are a bit less congested than yours. But of course there is still a lot to do. My tip...start the day with prayer asking the Lord to help you handle anything the day throws at you.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Our day runs more smoothly if we check the calendar and lay out clothes for tomorrow before going to bed. It gives us a chance to scramble a bit if we've forgotten something for tomorrow OR, better yet, it helps us get to sleep more peacefully because we feel calm and prepared.

    ReplyDelete
  83. The best way to get my day to start and end smoothly is to have a shiny, clean sink waiting for me when I come down to the kitchen in the morning. In other words, my dishes have to be done the night before.

    ReplyDelete
  84. My tip is to wake up early. I am up by 5:30 or 6:00 each morning, and I find that I get so much more done if I get up and get my day going sooner rather than later.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Something that makes my day run smoothly is if I've cleaned the night before. For some reason, it just changes everything when my house at least starts clean!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Start with a sparkly kitchen...and coffee!!! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  87. Planning the night before usually makes my day run smoother. Now if I could be consistent with that, I would eliminate the early morning rush. But who doesn't love the RUSH of it all, hahaha!

    ReplyDelete
  88. I have one large chore I do each day (i.e. Monday=change bedding, wash linens, Wednesday=laundry, Thursday=bathrooms, etc.) and then have set chores I make sure I do each day (pick-up toys, dishes, etc.)

    ReplyDelete
  89. the thing that keeps me sane in the morning, allowing 1 hour before I start getting ready for work. This is how I do it: get up at 6 am, make sure kids start getting up, 6 - 6:30 clean kitchen, pick up all rooms on the main floor, start a load of laundy, try to wake kids again 6:30 - 7:00 sit & relax, eat, have coffee, wake kids, 7:00 start getting ready for work. that hour helps me get a jump on the day

    ReplyDelete
  90. Oh, that laptop sounds awesome!

My best tip is to take a few minutes for yourself when you start your day, to pray, think, plan and be purposeful in the rest of your day. (I really need to always do that, my days go so much better.)

    ReplyDelete
  91. I love a good list! To make my day go smooth I write down everything I need to do, in order it needs to get done so I can somewhat function on autopilot for the errand part of the day!

  92. I get up an hour earlier than the rest of the family so I can get a head up on the day. I email, blog, get laundry started and eat breakfast with the newspaper in peace and that is priceless.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Great giveaway :) I have 4 kids and anyone knows the way you wake up can dictate how the rest of the day goes. So - I wake up (and bad mood or not) you have to put the smile on and be positive - your mood affects the families mood - and you might even trick yourself into believing that you were in a good mood all along :) The power of positive thinking!

  95. Eat a good breakfast! I'm terribly cranky when I don't, so starting my day off with any nifty orgainzational tricks doesn't mean a thing if I skimp on breakfast! That's really the key to starting the day running smoothly for me.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Getting things together the night before helps a lot. Like packing the kids' lunches and having my kids set their clothes out for the next day.

    ReplyDelete
  97. My day goes better when I have realistic expectations. I plan for things to take 5-10 minutes longer than I want them to - when I'm on time, I can go places without the "hurry" chant. When I don't have a huge list of things at the end of the day that DIDN'T get done, I can anticipate the next day rather than dread it :)

    ReplyDelete
  98. This is great! I could use a laptop. :) I think what helps my day to run smoothly is being careful to not overplan it, I try to keep things simple.

    ReplyDelete
  99. My crazy days always start better if I get up early and get my alone/quiet time done while it's still quiet!

    ReplyDelete
  100. My most productive days are when I am able to plan them out the night before. But my best days are when I can be spontaneous with my little guys.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Crossing my fingers and toes :) Such a day, lady! You're amazing! It's 11:15p and we're still in jammies... I have a feeling that all changes when babies grow up and have to be at school but I'll enjoy it while I can :) I think not that giving it (everything) to God and knowing he is in control helps me through my days. xo SJ

    ReplyDelete
  103. On work & school mornings, my day runs smoother if I pack lunch, pick out clothes & have a plan for dinner the night before. Great giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  104. good day minus a nap (for me), minus any computer time before children's bed time, minus conversations on the phone more than approximately 90 seconds, equals a productive day, free of any really crazy kid messes.

    ReplyDelete
  105. My best tip is to make lists for everything- shopping, cleaning, phone calls, etc. It helps to be able to cross things off your list to feel like you accomplished something!

    ReplyDelete
  106. Wow! Is all I can say to your day! :-)
My tip is to make sure that everything gets written down on the calendar. I live by my calendar. If it's on there I know what I am doing. It helps to keep me on top of things. Also in the evening when the kids are in bed, I take that time to relax with my hubby and just enjoy the silence!

    ReplyDelete
  107. My best tip is to make sure I get out of bed on time. If I can do that the rest of my day seems to go better.

    ReplyDelete
  108. There are two things that make my day go better. First I try to have the house as clean/picked up as possible before I go to bed and making the beds. It sounds crazy, but when I started just going through the rooms and making the bed the whole house stayed cleaner and my day went better.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Oh what I would give to win this GC!!!!

Ok. My best tip for making the day run smoothly is to start the day off right. That means doing a lot of things the night before. Get clothes for the day picked out, ironed, and ready to throw on; get as much as possible prepared for breakfast; put all backpacks, shoes, purses, keys, and cell phones by the front door. Doing those things, along with waking up early enough that I have a few quiet minutes to think and pray before the chaos of the day begins always helps our day get off to a smooth start.

    ReplyDelete

  156. To keep things running smooth, I try to stay off the computer while the kids are awake! They need my attention and when I'm on the computer they don't feel they are getting enough of it and begin acting up! If I wait til nap/bedtime, we are ALL happier! :)
